The Same CITY Everywhere: Delivering One Consistent Experience Across Our Territory

Ask a customer in the Minneapolis/St Paul Metro and a customer in a small town in Iowa to describe their experience with CITY Laundering Co, and the two answers should sound almost identical. That is not luck. It is a deliberate goal, and it shapes how the company trains, communicates, and solves problems.

“We want to give our customers a consistent experience,” says Colin Wetlaufer, President of the CITY Laundering Company. “So it doesn’t matter if they’re in Des Moines, if they’re in Fargo, if they’re in Wisconsin, across our entire territory.”

For a company that serves customers across a wide region, that promise is harder than it sounds. Every location, every route, and every team member is a point where the experience could quietly drift. CITY’s answer is to define exactly what “consistent” should mean.

“We want our customers to get a consistent thing from us in how we present ourselves, how they experience the service, and how we resolve problems,” Colin says.

Consistency is a promise, not a coincidence

When a business grows across cities and states, the biggest risk is not that quality drops in one place. It is that quality becomes unpredictable. One location handles a request one way, another handles it differently, and customers start to feel like they are dealing with several different companies that happen to share a name.

CITY Laundering Co treats consistency as a promise it owes every customer, regardless of geography. The way the team presents itself, the way service is delivered, and the way issues get resolved should look the same in every market. That predictability is what turns a vendor into a partner a customer can rely on.

“One of the ways we are able to stay consistent is having one communications team across all CITY divisions,” Director of Communications Emily Hauber said. “If we are going to be the region’s most responsive laundry, we have to start with the low-hanging fruit, and that is with consistently communicating. It seems like a simple ask, and it can be! Every customer deserves to be heard, and I take great pride in working each day to deliver on that.”

Good decisions start with good information

Consistency does not happen by telling people to try harder. It happens by giving them the information they need to do the job the same way every time.

“With a lack of information, we all make educated guesses,” Colin says.

Educated guesses are the enemy of a consistent experience. When two team members are missing the same piece of information, they will often solve the same problem in two different ways, and the customer ends up feeling the gap. By making detailed, practical information easy to find, CITY replaces guesswork with a shared standard that anyone on the team can follow, no matter where they work.

Making information easy to reach is especially important for a company spread across multiple markets. A best practice that lives only in one location does not help a customer in another. When the same knowledge is available to everyone, the standard travels with the company wherever it grows.

One team behind every location

Consistency across a territory ultimately comes down to people. Equipment and routes can be standardized on paper, but it is the team that decides whether a customer in one city feels the same care as a customer several hours away. That is why CITY connects its commitment to consistency directly to how it supports and develops its own people.

When a new team member learns the standard the same way an experienced one already knows it, the customer never has to absorb the learning curve. The goal is for the company to feel like a single, coordinated team even as it operates in many places at once, so that growth never comes at the expense of the experience.

Solving problems the same way, every time

That shared standard shows up most clearly in how problems get handled. Issues are a normal part of any business day, and Colin sees the way a company responds to them as central to every role, no matter the department.

“We want to consistently solve problems the same way,” he says. “And those problems become fewer problems in the future.”

There is a compounding benefit hidden in that idea. When a problem is solved the same reliable way each time, it stops being a recurring fire drill and becomes a known, manageable part of the routine. Over time, consistency does not just improve the customer experience. It reduces the number of problems the team has to face at all.

Making it easier for the team and the customer

None of this works if the standard lives only in a binder that nobody opens. CITY’s approach is to deliver information in more than one form so it actually reaches people in the flow of their work.

“We want to deliver it to you in a multitude of ways so that you can continue to improve your skill set and ultimately make your life easier here at CITY,” Colin says.

That last phrase matters. Consistency is often framed only as a benefit to the customer, but at CITY it is meant to help the team as well. When everyone knows the standard and has the tools to meet it, the work gets smoother, the surprises get fewer, and the service the customer receives gets steadier.

A customer in Des Moines and a customer in Fargo will probably never compare notes. But if they did, CITY Laundering Co wants them to find that they received the same company, the same standard, and the same care. That is what consistency really means. It is a promise that follows the customer from one location to the next, and it is why CITY keeps investing in the information and training that make it possible. In a business built on trust, being predictable in the best sense of the word is one of the most valuable things a partner can offer.
