True success is only possible by putting in the work, and work is no stranger to Hildy Webb, one of CITY’s sales representatives.

Introducing Hildy Webb | CITY Sales Representative

As a CITY sales representative, Hildy covers the Des Moines metropolitan territory. She is responsible for getting new business opportunities by calling on accounts, setting up appointments, and selling programs to meet each of our clients’ needs. And it all starts with a hard work ethic.

“The most important part of being a sales rep. is to work like your hair is on fire,” Hildy said.

As a Child

Even while growing up, Hildy always showed an appreciation for hard work, something she learned from her father.

“My dad has a work ethic like no one else I’ve met,” Hildy said. “I think seeing that as a kid and then being taught you work for what you want has really resonated with me.”

Hildy and her father also share a love for competition. As a child, she participated in her local Girl Scouts troop, and with the help of her father, Hildy was the top cookie sales girl every year.

“I was very involved in my Girl Scouts,” Hildy said. “My dad and I both took [cookie sales] very seriously.”

When Hildy was twelve years old, her mother, father, and brother moved from a west suburb of Chicago to Ankeny, Iowa.

“It took a little time to get settled in, but I ended up loving it in Iowa and was so glad we made that move,” Hildy said. “I really consider Iowa my home and where I am from now. It was a very good fit for our family.”

Teen Years

As a high school student, Hildy was involved in many activities with basketball, show choir, and debate being among her favorites.

“When I discovered there was a team of people that literally just argued their points, I was in heaven,” she said.

But in her last few years of high school, Hildy decided that in order to get the things she wanted – a car, a cell phone, and new clothing – she would have to put in the work.

“I found out very quickly that money, in fact, does not grow on trees, and if I wanted it, I would have to earn it,” she said.

Her first job was working at Hy-Vee in the kitchen where she worked a lot of Saturday and Sunday mornings. Here, she learned the importance of working hard and taking pride in a job well done.

Hildy as a Hawkeye

After high school, Hildy attended University of Iowa. Her parents helped pay her tuition, but when it came to living expenses, Hildy was on her own.

Unlike many of her college friends, she held a job while attending classes.

“I had such a sense of pride knowing that I had a job, and I earned the money I needed to take care of myself,” she said.

Hildy worked at a hotel in downtown Iowa City as a bartender and server for her entire college career. By working hard, she was also promoted into management.

“It was a great experience with being on my own, and another experience that I am grateful for,” she said.

When it came time to pick a college major, Hildy decided to go with economics as her favorite high school teacher taught the subject.

“Micro and macro economics were by far my favorite lectures,” she said. “I just found the material so interesting.”

Sales, Sales, Sales

After college, Hildy landed a job in Florida for a short time before settling in the Quad Cities where she landed her first commission sales job as a wedding consultant for David’s Bridal.

“I realized here that no one could tell me how much money I was going to make. Only I determined that by how hard I wanted to work,” Hildy said.

Not long after, the manager of a furniture store across the street from David’s Bridal recruited her. Hildy ended up spending the next five years at several Furniture Row locations across eastern Iowa and was promoted three times.

“The company was fantastic and really opened doors for me,” Hildy said. “They saw the potential with in me and helped me realize it as well.”

Moving Back Home

After having moved around a lot while working for the furniture company, Hildy decided it was time to make a change and move to Des Moines to be closer to her family as family is very important to her.

“My immediate family is small – just myself, my brother, mom, and dad. We have always been really close because of that,” Hildy said. “But with working long hours, I didn’t get any time back home with my family which really started to take a toll on me. Especially once my nieces were born, my priorities shifted a bit, and it was time to get back to Des Moines.”

Hildy looked for jobs in the Des Moines area and saw an advertisement for a sales position at CITY and decided to apply.

“I applied, interviewed, fell in love, and the rest is history now!” Hildy said.

Why Sales?

To be good in sales, you have to be able to do two things: communicate well with others and also love doing it. With Hildy’s background and love for economics, competition, and customer service, there’s no wonder sales was her calling.

“People. I’m all about people and talking to people, and getting to know things about people,” she said. “The more people you talk to, the more opportunities you find.”

Why CITY?

Finding a job opportunity that resonates with you is the best feeling, and for Hildy being able to make a difference matters.

“The opportunity I have within CITY to me is huge. What I do on a daily basis is really impacting CITY in huge way. I’m not just a number,” she said.

The fact that CITY is completely transparent as a company is also valuable to Hildy.

“We decided to switch to CITY because they were genuine and the family owned aspect was very appealing,” Chad Witte from Des Moines Cold Storage said. “During the sales process, Hildy Webb was upfront, transparent, and natural. Hildy came through and has done everything she said she would do.”

“Everything we say, we are going to do. It’s not just a gimmick or a show,” Hildy said.

CITY as Family

Hildy’s immediate family is not the only ones important to her. Working with the CITY team is a unique experience because of the close-knit group of people that work there.

“We’re all very close. We keep it extremely open. We can talk to each other about what’s going on. And we can fix it,” Hildy said. “It’s very open and honest and blunt. That’s the best way to be.”

After about a year of working at CITY, Hildy also recruited her younger brother, Barney Webb, to join the team.

“I’ve always wanted Barney on my team…He was looking for something different and something that would fit his personality and his work ethic, and this just seemed like a perfect fit,” Hildy said. “I could see how successful the opportunities were with CITY and I could just see the vision and where we were going. I just thought, why not get him on board? It’d be awesome to have my brother alongside me as we continue to grow.”

CITY as a Machine

Every employee at CITY plays an integral role in its success, but the sales department is fundamental in making a great first impression.

“People make a judgment within the first moments. I am the first person they associate with the company,” Hildy said.

Years Ago

About eight years ago, CITY made the decision to further grow its Des Moines territory. CITY sent Mark Ballo, now the Des Moines regional manager, to grow the client base and to build a team.

“I feel proud to have Hildy on the CITY team,” Mark said. “She takes coaching extremely well both professionally and personally. I look forward to Hildy’s continual growth.”

Up until April of 2018, CITY serviced clients from a rental depot space.

“When we made the decision to service the Greater Des Moines area in 2010, we knew it was just a matter of time before we wanted something more permanent,” President of CITY Colin Wetlaufer said.

Hildy, as well as the entire sales and service team in Des Moines, envisioned the possibilities of having a permanent space.

“I remember when I started, Mark had been talking about this vision that Colin [President of CITY] had to eventually build a permanent location. And he always said it’s up to us; we have to give him a reason to do it,” Hildy said.

By working hard to make relationships and increase its commitment to the area, CITY decided to build a new facility in Polk City, a town not far from Des Moines.

“It’s been a great experience so far, and we’re excited for the future…now we finally have a place to call home,” Colin said.

“I’m very excited to see where the next three, eight, twenty years takes us,” Hildy said.

Hildy Today

Between spending time with family, and working hard at her career, Hildy hopes to always stay happy, healthy, and surrounded by the people she loves.

“It seems like I’ve grown a lot. My focus has changed with my outside life and at CITY. My career is extremely important, and CITY really provides an opportunity for me with how much growth potential there is with the company,” Hildy said.
