CITY Laundering Co has a new Director of Operations, Luis Portillo. Portillo brings 16 years of industrial experience to lead the Iowa-based industrial laundering facility to continue to hit their projected growth rate, according to CITY President Colin Wetlaufer.

“With the scaling and the growth, we really needed somebody that completely owned the operations side of the company. We really wanted to bring in somebody that had a little bit more robust resume and some of the things we were working towards with Lean [Manufacturing]. I mean, he was the Director of Global Lean Productivity in a Fortune 500 company, so we knew he could do the job,” said Wetlaufer.

Portillo comes to CITY from Indiana, and according to Portillo, he chose CITY based on the company environment and Midwest values.

“When I talked to Colin and the team and learned about the culture, it seemed like a perfect fit. They talked to me about what the future is going to look like, and I fell in love with the vision,” said Portillo. “It’s not like CITY just wants to keep the status quo at all. They want to be better. They want to grow. So, that matched my way of thinking.”

Portillo believes the way to improving CITY’s operations aside from establishing ongoing processes is the empowerment and accountability of the current staff.

“Our job as leaders is to make sure individuals [CITY staff] have the knowledge, the skills, the desire, and the opportunity to succeed in a way that leads to collective success at CITY,” Portillo said. “I’m really looking forward to the challenges and opportunities and my vision is to make CITY a showcase plant.”

Production, maintenance, janitorial, and the plant management will directly report to Portillo and he will also play a role in optimizing the new sales onboarding process and the ongoing maintenance within the service department.

“The stars kind of aligned with Luis. He reminds me so much of other outstanding people we have here at CITY,” Wetlaufer said.
