Health experts advise ‘social distancing’ to stop the spread of COVID-19, because for any area, if you touch an infected surface, that is how the virus could spread.

As a provider to the food processing, agriculture, critical manufacturing, public utilities [water and wastewater treatment] and energy production, CITY’s is considered an essential service so it is crucial to stay in operations and keep clients and employees safe and healthy.

“We are taking all of the necessary actions to keep our employees as safe and healthy as possible with all of the sanitation actions,” Director of Operations Luis Portillo said.

The high volume areas are being sanitized multiple times throughout the day especially before and after every break. Luis mentioned when they implemented these new sanitation efforts, the CITY custodial team understood how important their role was and everyone was willing to do what was needed to keep the plant as clean as possible.

Leading the custodial drive is Jen Hickey who has been with CITY for over two years.

Jen relates her role at CITY to her home life of making sure her home is regularly cleaned and well dusted so “my son’s asthma doesn’t flare up.”

“I take as much pride in my work as I do when I take care of my son,” Jen said. “CITY is not safe if it is not cleaned properly so I am taking extra precaution and sanitizing areas 6-7 times a day because I know it will lower the [COVID-19] virus from potentially spreading.”

Plant Manager Dakota Gipper said on top of the custodial team, there are many others from multiple departments jumping on board to clean and disinfect the plant.

“I do appreciate all of the extra efforts because it makes you want to come to work more when you know it is a cleaner environment,” Dakota said. “All of the work that they are putting into it, makes me feel better about the job and it takes a little tension off of everyone’s minds.”

Jen said one of her biggest motivations when it comes to keeping the plant clean is that she looks and treats at her coworkers like family.

“Growing up, my dad died when I was young and my mom is my idol,” Jen said. “She taught me how to be proud of your work regardless if you are a CEO or a janitor like I am. It doesn’t matter, you have to take pride in your work and do the best that you can. I do what I do because I would want them to do it for me and second of all, I care about who I work for and who I work with. In my eyes, we are all a family.”
