Strength in Numbers | The Importance of Teamwork

As a current student-athlete at Upper Iowa University and part-time employee in CITY’s Marketing Department, I have learned the importance of teamwork. I began working at CITY as an intern in August 2019 and currently work as a part-time employee as I complete my master’s degree. From day one since I’ve started working at CITY, I quickly noticed the collaborative team culture that was present.

What is Required for Teamwork

The concept of teamwork requires good communication, organization, and a positive mindset. It’s more than simply working together; the team chemistry needs to be there too. A team has achieved good chemistry when everyone works well together and can reach goals collectively. Chemistry and teamwork are key components when it comes to growing as an individual. Teamwork gives new insights on coworkers’ strategies, which helps develop one’s own skill set and knowledge.

Implementing Teamwork into the Workplace

First, get to know your coworkers and establish good relationships. From there, don’t be afraid to interact by asking each other questions, collaborating on projects, and problem-solving as a group. Teamwork stems from positive interactions with one another and building trust.

Benefits of Teamwork

What are some benefits of teamwork?

  • Increases productivity
  • Encourages innovation
  • Improves employee morale
  • Increases employee engagement
  • Improves quality of service
  • Resolves conflicts

Welcoming Newcomers to the Team

At CITY, there are always newcomers joining the team. From day one, I make an effort to get to know them and their work style. As a newcomer myself back in 2019, the best thing is feeling welcomed into a new work environment. When I know my strengths and the strengths of others, we can work together efficiently and effectively.

The CITY Team

Working with the team has prepared me for a career after graduation. I’ve learned my own strengths and weaknesses which have shaped what I want to pursue. Without my team experience at CITY, I would be miles behind where I am now. Each person in the marketing team has helped me develop a variety of skills, from design to SEO. Everyone has different talents, and we all bring those talents to the table.

A Great Teammate

What differentiates a good teammate from a great teammate? For me, great teammates are the ones that have impacted my life for the better. They will continue to be lifelong teammates and root for me along my journey, both at work and outside of work. Some of the best days at the office are the ones I get to spend with the team because we are truly stronger together.
