What Makes a Good Route Service Representative?

Route Service Representative Jerry Johnson
The job of Route Service Representative, or RSR, is one of the most important jobs at CITY. They are the employees who interact most directly with our customers and we consistently receive positive feedback about our RSRs. Here’s just a sample of some recent comments:
“In all the years we’ve been with CITY, there’s been nothing but great personalities and positive attitudes.”
“Extremely friendly employees that are willing to work with us and make the partnership successful.”
“Our route rep has gone to great lengths to build trust with us. He is quick to respond and assist in the resolution of any issues, and he provides spectacular customer service.”
It’s not just the customers who are happy, either; our route reps love their jobs and speak often about how much they enjoy getting to interact with customers, meet new people, and get to know everyone who works at the businesses they service. Plus, with a four-day workweek, it’s a wonderful role for people with the necessary skills.
So, what does it take to be a good RSR? We asked a few of our District Managers to describe the most important qualities of an RSR, and here’s what they said:
“They should be self-driven, with an internal passion to succeed, and the mindset of taking ownership of their position to keep the customers happy.”
“It is important for RSRs to always act with integrity and keep in mind, not just with regards to what’s best for CITY, but what’s best for the customer as well.”
“A positive attitude is a must, and someone who enjoys interacting with others always makes the job easier.”
“Adaptability, flexibility, and an outside-the-box approach to customer dilemmas are some of the best skills to have for a Route Rep.”
“Deep knowledge of your products and services — and the confidence to talk about them in detail — are important for this job.”
“The ability to stay level-headed and patient with customers when they are frazzled is a necessity.”
