Understanding New OSHA Regulations: What Employers Need to Know—and How CITY Laundering Can Help
The workplace is changing, and so are the safety standards that govern it. For organizations with maintenance teams, electricians, or utility personnel, OSHA regulation 1910.269 is more than just a legal guideline—it’s a responsibility.
At CITY Laundering, we understand the critical role this regulation plays in protecting your team. And as your uniform provider, we believe it’s our job not just to deliver clean garments —but to equip you with the knowledge, tools, and support you need to stay compliant, confident, and safe.
“Times are changing and we want our customers to look at us like a trusted partner,” Director of Communications Emily Hauber said. “This OSHA regulation is just one more reason why it is important to partner with a local provider who cares more about the people in their community.”
What Is OSHA 1910.269?
OSHA 1910.269 applies to employees working around electric power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. It mandates employers to assess arc flash hazards and provide flame-resistant (FR), arc-rated (AR) clothing to workers exposed to specific risks, such as electric arcs or molten metal. This update mandates that all PPE provided must “properly fit” each affected employee to ensure they are adequately protected.
And this year, several key updates to the regulation are taking effect. These changes require employers to take even greater responsibility when it comes to garment selection, employee training, maintenance, and hazard communication.
What Changes Have Happened
Here are some of the most important updates you should be aware of:
• Accurate Hazard Assessments: Employers must conduct documented assessments to determine arc flash risks and calculate the estimated heat energy exposure for affected workers.
• Arc-Rated Clothing Requirements: Employees must wear FR clothing with an arc rating equal to or greater than the incident energy identified in the assessment.
• Garment Care, Inspection, and Maintenance: FR garments must be properly laundered, maintained, and routinely inspected. Employees must also be trained on how to care for their uniforms to preserve protection.
• Qualified Personnel: At least two qualified employees are now required when working on energized equipment.
• Emergency Readiness: Field crews must be trained in first aid and CPR, with at least one trained individual available within four minutes at fixed sites.
• Coordination with Contractors: Host and contract employers must share key safety information and training records related to electrical hazards.
