Being one of the senior leaders in the CITY Des Moines facility, Barney Webb continues to raise the bar for himself and his direct report employees.

“Being here in Des Moines, it forces you to always think about the next day and stay one step ahead of the competition,” Barney said. “It’s about pushing yourself and everyone around you to be the best they can be every day.”

Barney started out as a Route Service Apprentice in the Des Moines area and was promoted to Route Service Representative [RSR] in 2017 and, District Manager in 2019. He now oversees all Des Moines RSRs and is excited to continue to work with customers in the area and grow CITY’s business.

CITY is an honest company that tries to do right by their customers every time,” Barney said. “I enjoyed working on a route. I got to meet a lot of people and now I get to take that to the next level. I get to meet even more people and make a bigger difference for my company.”

Barney enjoys the challenge of making sure everything goes right for his RSRs and Des Moines Regional Manager Mark Ballo. He says he is constantly learning new things and being able to apply what he learned as an apprentice and then a seasoned route service representative, into CITY’s everyday operation. Being able to grow with CITY and as a person is an important part of why he cherishes the opportunity to be in a management position at CITY.

“We all make mistakes,” Barney said. “But it’s about learning from them and making the people around you better because of the mistakes you made. It’s awesome to get to look at this brand-new facility and all the new things that we’re tackling.”

Barney works closely with Mark regularly. He says he has learned a lot from him and appreciates the confidence Mark entrusts in him. During his time as an RSR, Barney often looked to Mark for advice and saw him as a role model for where he personally and professionally wanted to go.

“Mark challenges you every day or sometimes multiple times a day,” Barney said. “It’s something that I need personally and professionally. He does a really good job of pushing me. He is open, he is honest, and he helps me grow as a manager.

Barney knows being in management is not without its challenges, but he has taken it in stride. During his first couple of months as a District Manager, he was still running his regular RSR route and being on a truck daily. To him, the reward of being able to set an example for new employees and building a future at CITY outweighs any obstacle thrown his way.

“I want to make sure things are done the right way,” Barney said. “We have just stayed in stride and keep servicing our accounts, taking care of business and growing. I am proud to be part of the Des Moines team.”
